If you’re trying to choose between Medicare Advantage and a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, here’s the key difference in one sentence: Medicare Advantage replaces your original Medicare, while a Medigap plan supplements it. Both help cover costs that original Medicare doesn’t, but they work in completely different ways — and choosing the wrong one can cost you significantly.
“Medicare Advantage replaces your original Medicare, while a Medigap plan supplements it”
What is Medicare Advantage (Part C)?
Medicare Advantage is an all-in-one alternative to original Medicare offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, the private insurer takes over your Part A and Part B coverage. Most plans also bundle in Part D prescription drug coverage, and many include extras like dental, vision, and hearing benefits.
Medicare Advantage plans typically use networks (HMO or PPO), meaning you may need to see in-network doctors or get referrals to see specialists. Your costs are usually structured around copays, and your out-of-pocket maximum is capped each year.
What is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan?
A Medigap policy works alongside original Medicare — it does not replace it. You keep your red, white, and blue Medicare card and your access to any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare nationwide. The Medigap plan then picks up many of the “gaps” that original Medicare leaves behind, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
Because you’re keeping original Medicare, you’ll typically need a separate Part D plan for prescription drug coverage.
Which One is Right for You?
The answer depends on your health needs, budget, and lifestyle. Medicare Advantage plans often have lower monthly premiums but may have higher out-of-pocket costs when you use services. Medigap plans generally have higher premiums but offer more predictable costs and broader provider access — which matters a lot if you travel frequently or have ongoing health conditions.
